The creation of a Suburban Railway stop in the Karellas area of Peania is on track… to be implemented, as everything seems to indicate. The Ministry of Infrastructure and OSE approved the study, as well as the donation from a cluster of companies to finance the project.
According to information, the cluster of companies includes Prodea, Dimand, Intrakat, Premia and Autohellas that are interested in the development and upgrading of the area.
With the acceptance of financing from private individuals, the way is opened for the implementation of the project, which is expected to upgrade the wider area. It is estimated that the works will start in early 2024 and if everything goes smoothly it may be handed over for use to the passenger public within the next year.
It is estimated that funds of around 4 to 5 million euros will be required for the construction. Of pivotal importance, however, according to sources in the know, was the acceptance of the donation by the State in a relatively short time, given the bureaucracy that is followed in these cases.
The stop, according to sources in the know, was included in the original plans for the Suburban Railway line designed for the 2004 Athens Olympics, but did not proceed due to cost.
It will be built between the existing Peania-Kantza and Koropi stations. At the same time, it will be connected to line 3 of the Athens Metro, Municipal Theater – Plakentias – Airport.
The benefits
The creation of the new suburban station, is expected to connect the settlements of Peania, Karellas, Spata, as well as the industrial zones of the area with the Metropolitan Complex of Athens and wider Attica, strengthening the prospect of their further development and consequently of the business in the area.
In particular, it will offer access to the residents of the area and to the workers since many companies now have their headquarters there.
With its operation, it will add the area of Karellas Peania to the mass transport system and in particular to the Metro and Suburban network.
Passengers will be able to be in less than 30 minutes from Syntagma to the area of Peania, and in about 20 minutes from Maroussi, contributing to the reduction of vehicle traffic and traffic congestion in the area by further developing urban transport and the connection with Athens and the other Municipalities of the basin as well as a connection via the Metro with the port of Piraeus.
