The head of Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) last week announced the start of the long-awaited construction phase of a subsea electric power transmission system linking the power grids of Israel, Cyprus and Greece.
The massive and ambitious EuroAsia Interconnector Ltd. project will span much of the eastern Mediterranean, connecting the Middle East with the large island of Cyprus before proceeding to southeast Europe and Greece—a distance of 1,208 kilometers.
IPTO CEO and Chairman Manos Manousakis made the announcement from Dubai, speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28).
He said construction will be undertaken by a newly-established special-purpose IPTO subsidiary named Great Sea Interconnector.
The EU has labeled the 2,000-MW project an “electricity highway” connecting the three countries’ national grids via a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable.
