Greece exceeded its one-day record for electricity consumption on Monday, amid a severe heat wave scorning the east Mediterranean country, with the hourly demand between 13.00 and 14.00 exceeding 10,737 MW. The previous record came just last Friday, on July 30.

According to figures supplied by ENTSO – E, demand over seven straight hours exceeded the 10,000 MW level, meaning that all natural gas- and lignite-fired power stations in the country operated at peak capacity.

Earlier in the day, Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself chaired an emergency meeting at the headquarters of the country’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE), calling on consumers to limit their electrical consumption where possible during peak daylight and evening hours.
