Crete is dynamically included in the international broadband maps, as Grid Telecom proceeds to the naming of the fiber optic cables that connect the island with the mainland, through the electrical interconnections with Peloponnese and Attica.
With this move, which is of a strategic nature and is in line with international good practices, the IPTO subsidiary expands the possibilities of commercial exploitation of its state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure. At the same time, with the increase of the “visibility” of the cables, the position of Crete in the submarine telecommunication corridors, which pass through the Mediterranean, is significantly strengthened.
The dual fiber optic cable system that connects Crete with the Peloponnese and is already in operation, has received the names MINOAS-EAST and MINOAS-WEST. Respectively, the double fiber optic cable system that was recently installed between Pachi Megaron and Heraklion, in the context of the construction of the Crete-Attica electrical interconnection, has been named APOLLO-EAST and APOLLO-WEST.
By utilizing the 940 km long fiber optic cables that connect Crete with the broadband networks of mainland Greece – and consequently of Europe – the IPTO subsidiary adds a capacity of hundreds of Tbps for data transfer, through four alternative geographical routes.
In this way, Grid Telecom further consolidates its position as one of the main neutral providers of wholesale telecommunications services in Greece, creating the bases for the development of digital infrastructure of strategic importance in Crete.
The Director of Grid Telecom, Mr. George Psyrris, stated in this regard:
“Our initiative to give fiber optics internationally recognizable names, inspired by Greek mythology, will significantly expand the scope for their commercial use, attracting new business partnerships of our Company with telecommunications organizations inside and outside Greece. Grid Telecom, through an extensive optical network of high availability and reliability that currently exceeds 4,000 km, is constantly developing new alternative routes with the island country and neighboring countries, steadily strengthening its position in the wholesale telecommunications market.”
