A memorandum of understanding between Greece and the United States was updated on Monday, with the relevant tourism minister for the former and the US ambassador in the country signing the relevant agreement.
The MoU, signed by Minister Vassilis Kikilias and US envoy Geoffrey Pyatt, updates a previous one first implemented 31 years ago, and aims to boost bilateral cooperation in a sector that comprises a significant chunk of Greece’s GDP.
Among others, the updated MoU foresees the exchange of best practices regarding travel and tourism, as well as promoting innovation and digitization in the sector, along with exchanging information on investment possibilities in either country.
Taking to his twitter account after a signing ceremony, held with the Acropolis in the background, Kikilias noted that “… Very happy and honored to sign the MoU on Tourism between the Greek and US and administration with Amb. Pyatt, who has been a true friend of Greece during his term. This year our ties will be further strengthened with more than 460,000 seats available from US cities to Athens.”
In his address, among others, Pyatt said that “…We saw Greece’s tourism economy rebound in unexpected ways last summer. Americans, I am glad to say, flocked to Greece, thanks in part to the nine direct flights from Athens that American carriers added to their schedules. In March, Minister Kikilias and I were able to welcome the first Delta direct flight of 2022 and watched as multiple Americans disembarked, eager to begin their Greek holidays. And just this last weekend United Airlines began its direct flight from New York as well.”
The MoU has a duration of five years.
