“We have a neighbor who the more isolated he gets, the more enraged he becomes,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday evening, hours after an unprecedented crescendo of threats, saber-rattling and hyper-revisionist language Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A series of consecutive posts on the Turkish strongman’s official Twitter account, in Greek in fact, came as the embattled Erdogan government considers a snap election amid a punishing economic downturn and regional war following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at an awards ceremony hosted by the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in the Greek capital, Mitsotakis said “we have a war going on in the European continent, something unthinkable a year ago; we have an unprecedented energy disruption; a disruption in global trade; we face a food security risk; we have inflation that’s eating away at households’ income throughout Europe; and also, we have a neighbor who the more isolated he gets, the more enraged he becomes.”

He added that the time has come for a “national rallying” in the face of an unpredictable neighbor, and constant interventions to ensure a productive and normal day-to-day routine.
