Street disturbances were reported in central Athens on Friday evening, near the spot where a protest rally was set to begin, and specifically in front of the old Athens university administration building (Propylea).

According to initial reports, protesters began tossing stones, paint and even fire extinguishers at assembled riot police when the latter prevented the protest from taking up all of the main thoroughfare, Panepistimiou boulevard.

Riot police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Fifteen people have been detained so far.
