Bloomberg on Tuesday reported that a deal was being negotiated to allow some type of repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles, in an article entitled “Parthenon Marbles May Return to Greece in Exchange Deal With UK.”

The article, bylined by Alberto Nardelli and Alex Wickham, notes that “…The British Museum and the Acropolis Museum in Athens are closing in on an agreement that would see the Parthenon Marbles returned over time to Greece as part of a cultural exchange, ending a feud over the historical artifacts that dates back to the 1800s.”

Greek culture ministry officials and museums in the east Mediterranean country have achieved the repatriation of scores of antiquities over the recent period, often in agreements with foreign museums, via loan and exchanges mechanisms – and often with the repatriation dates extending decades into the future.

The Bloomberg article specifically details such agreements.

Returning the friezes and portions of the Parthenon – the quintessence of Classical Antiquity – has been a long-standing demand by Athens, although the iconic British Museum in London has been loath to consider such a prospect.

However, Greek culture ministry sources in Athens, in the wake of the high-profile Bloomberg article, denied that the Acropolis Museum and British Museum are close to an agreement for a “gradual return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece as part of a cultural exchange.

Two significant provisions cited in the Bloomberg article are that the British Museum would keep exact replicas on display, and that Greece would provide antiquity exhibits in return.
