The skyrocketing course of food prices in Greece, mirroring much of the ominous trend in Europe over the past two years, was laid bare this week on Mega Channel’s afternoon Live News program, with a list of specific grocery items that cost 109 euros in January 2022 today costing 215.33 euros – a whopping increase of 98 percent.
The exact same list of products, with the same brand names and quantity size, cost 178.14 euros in January 2023.
Detergents were the inflationary “champions”, with a specific brand and quantity of dishwashing tablets costing 6.99 euros six months ago, but now reaching 13.77 euros, a hike of 97 percent.
Cheeses are in the similarly unenviable second place, with the “kasseri” type (yellow, from sheep’s milk) a year ago costing 14.95 per kilo. Today, the same type of cheese, sold over-the-counter, costs 26.32 euros per kilo, an increase of 76 percent.
One brand of breakfast cereal last July cost 3.68 euros when purchased at a specific store, rising to 4,59 euros in January 2023 and today reaching 4,99 euros
