Coroner on Kos case: Anastasia died of asphyxiation; Polish PM refers to extradition

A 27-year Polish woman whose body was discovered on Sunday on the Dodecanese island of Kos died of asphyxiation, a coroner on Rhodes has determined, meaning Greek police and judicial authorities are now officially dealing with a homicide.

The woman’s nude body was found partially stuffed into a plastic trash bag, and covered by a sheet and brush near a reedbed, roughly a kilometer from the gritty residence of a 32-year-old Bangladeshi man who worked on the island as a laborer.

The latter is in police custody and is charged with abduction and sexual assault. A murder charge has not yet been filed by prosecutors.

The suspect on Monday was granted an extension to testify before the investigating magistrate on Wednesday.

Anastasia-Patricia Rubinska was reported missing by her Polish companion on June 12. Both worked as seasonal tourism sector employees on the popular holiday isle.

Besides the nationality of the victim and the man allegedly involved in her disappearance, the case attracted an even greater international dimension on Monday, with the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, taking to his official Twitter account to state that “…I am shocked by the brutal murder of 27-year-old Anastasia. The perpetrator must face very severe consequences. Therefore, we will ask Greece to extradite the suspect to a Polish court and receive the highest possible sentence.”
