Increased demand for the import and export of natural gas via Greece’s national transmission system (ESFA) was ascertained during an inaugural, non-binding market test conducted this week by the system’s operator, DESFA.

According to a relevant announcement by the utility, a total of 27 companies submitted requests to obtain transmission capacity, beginning next year and until 2050. Of the 27 proposals, 17 emanate from multinationals, most in central and southeast Europe, but also from the United States. Roughly 10 percent of interest came from Greece-based companies.

According to DESFA’s management, this development “…highlights Greece’s enhanced role in the region’s energy map…with about 40 percent of requests submitted by companies that have never been active in the Greek natural gas market”.

DESFA said significant interest focused on the existing TAP line, as well as the new interconnection points, such as Amphitriti (the Alexandroupolis FSRU), Komotini (IGB), Evzoni (Greece-North Macedonia Interconnector), as well as FSRUs under construction near the cities of Volos, Thessaloniki and Corinth.
