Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) and Bulgaria’s Electricity System Operator (ESO EAD) have inaugurated a new 400 kV extra-high voltage inter-connection between the two southeast European neighbors. Power transmission through the new line commenced on Friday.

The specific transmission line is the second connecting the two countries, and significantly increases exchange capacity.

A permanent working group comprised of representatives of all transmission operators in the wider region will meet to identify new available transmission capacity on the Greece-Bulgaria cross-border lines.

The total length of the international interconnection, starting from the Nea Sanda substation in Rhodope prefecture, and ending at the Maritsa east substation in Bulgaria, is 151 kilometers, of which 29 kilometers are located on Greek territory.
