The third of a series of actions aimed at protecting the marine life of the islands was carried out at the beginning of June by the Attica Group, as part of the “we sail together” responsibility program, which aims at further fostering volunteering and the contribution of the Group’s employees to social and environmental issues.
As highlighted, following the two successful trips in Naxos and Kos, the third stop was Santorini, where on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June the volunteers-workers, together with the volunteers of Aegean Rebreath in collaboration with the Port Authority Thiras, worked to clean the Vlychada shoal.
Dozens of objects littered the seabed
During the action volunteers collected from the seabed and sorted: 834 plastic and synthetic polymers items, 39 tires, 71 fabric items, blankets, rugs and carpets, 495 metal items, 72 glass/ceramic items and 5.5 bags of various plastic objects.
In addition, on Saturday June 4, approximately 70 children from the 1st Thira Scout Troop and the Thira Nautical Club had the opportunity to attend a briefing by an Attica Group employee-volunteer on proper waste management and the benefits of recycling. The children also participated in a plastic recycling workshop organized by the Athens Makerspace team.
According to Attica Group, “the objective of the program is to further raise awareness among the local communities of the islands where we operate in matters of marine environment protection, circular economy and sustainable development for a better today and an even better tomorrow for all of us. An additional objective is to instill the value of volunteering and cultivate the spirit of cooperation among our employees.”
