Three new stations on the extension of Metro Line 3 (blue line) to Piraeus are to be delivered for use by the travelling public on Monday, October 10, at 14:00 in the afternoon. The stations “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Dimotiko Theatro” are expected to greatly relieve traffic congestion around Greece’s largest port, as well as creating a direct rail link to the Athens international airport.
The additional stations are forecast to increase passenger traffic on the metro by 132,000 a day, while reducing the number of cars on the road by 23,000 a day and lowering carbon emissions by 120 tonnes per day. The total travel time from the Piraeus Port to the “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport is estimated to be just 55 minutes.
In addition to the three new stations, which increase the total number of stations on the line to 27, the project also included 7.6 kilometres of tunnel and associated infrastructure.
The new “Piraeus” station will also be an important transport hub as it connects metro lines 1 (overground former ISAP line to Kifissia) and 3, the port, the suburban Proastiakos Railway and the tram network, allowing passengers to transfer from one to the other.
Trains will run from Dimotiko Theatro to Doukissis Plakentias station in northeast Athens every four minutes at peak hours (7:30-11:00 and 13:30 to 17:30) and every nine minutes (down from 10 minutes) late at night (22:00 – 00:20). Trains to the airport will run every 36 minutes.
The first trains will start from Dimotiko Theatro and Doukissis Plakentias at 5:30, as well as at the stations Egaleo and Monastiraki toward Doukissis Plakentias and from Ethniki Amyna toward Dimotiko Theatro. The last trains from Sunday to Thursday will leave Dimotiko Theatro at 23:59 and Doukissis Plakentias at 00:03. On Friday and Saturday, when trains schedules are extended until after midnight, the last trains will depart at 1:06 from Dimotiko Theatro and at 1:10 from Doukissis Plakentias. The last trains from Syntagma Square depart at 00:23 on all days from Sunday to Thursday and at 1:30 after Friday and Saturday night.
Changes to bus lines
The opening of the new stations will be accompanied by changes in the bus lines to serve the new stations and allow passengers to transfer onto buses, which will be divided into two phases.
In the first phase, there will be changes that will be assessed after the stations have operated for some time, followed by a second stage with additional measures taking into account the observations made during the first phase and an assessment of the transport network in the wider area.
The changes will affect bus lines 831 Egaleo-Piraeus, 810 Schisto-Korydallos, 830 Agia Varvara-Piraeus, 846 Neapoli-Nikea-Piraeus. Line 900, created to link new stations in the transitional period, is being abolished. The terminals of the bus lines are unchanged.
