They are immigrants from Afghanistan, Egypt and Iran, as the spokesman of the Coast Guard, Nikos Kokkalas, told state broadcaster ERT.
In addition to the Coast Guard vessel, a helicopter and 2 ships sailing in the vicinity are participating in the operation.
Rescue efforts are hampered by adverse weather conditions, with winds of up to 8 Beaufort and gusts of up to 9 Beaufort.
