A Hellenic Coast Guard operation to rescue migrants off the coast of Evia is underway.

According to information, so far, the boat set sail from Smyrna (Izmir) and sank in Greek waters.

A Coast Guard vessel located and rounded up 9 migrants from the rocky island of Mandilos in the Kafirea straights, while according to their testimonies, 68 people were on board the sailboat. They are immigrants from Afghanistan, Egypt and Iran, as the spokesman of the Coast Guard, Nikos Kokkalas, told state broadcaster ERT.

In addition to the Coast Guard vessel, a helicopter and 2 ships sailing in the vicinity are participating in the operation.

Rescue efforts are hampered by adverse weather conditions, with winds of up to 8 Beaufort and gusts of up to 9 Beaufort.
