The body of one of two missing aviators of a crashed F-4 Phantom II was recovered after the fighter plane crashed into the waters in the southern Ionian Sea.
The US-made warplane, among the oldest models in the Hellenic Air Force’s arsenal, went down off the northwest coast of the Peloponnese at roughly 10.30 (08.30 GMT) on Monday, some 25 nautical miles from its take-off point.
The two-seater fighter plane, part of the 338th combat squadron based at the Andravida base, was on a training mission at the time with another F-4. Wreckage of the fighter plane was later recovered in the water.
The body of the fallen pilot, aged 29, was also recovered in the water by search-and-rescue units.
A search is continuing for the other pilot, aged 31.
