The great penetration of the Internet has had a significant impact on the everyday lives of Greeks and on the way in which they now choose to make their purchases. It is indicative that a little more than 2 out of 3 have made at least one online purchase in the last six months, with the most active purchasing group being between the ages of 25-35.
According to the new version of the Focus on Tech Life survey that has been “running” on the initiative of Focus Bari since 1995, the use of the Internet in Greece is now universal, while the degree of utilization of the possibilities that the Internet gives to citizens-consumers is constantly increasing for communication, information, socialization, education, shopping, etc.
Internet use now reaches 84% among the 65-74 age group nationwide, marking an 11% increase in the last two years with 94% of Greeks owning a smartphone, which they use daily to access the Internet. In fact, more than seven out of ten make online purchases.
This new group of online shoppers has pushed businesses to develop, especially since the outbreak of the pandemic, online stores that have their own highly dynamic audience that belongs to all age groups. Indicatively, as reflected in Convert Group’s latest data, in the first quarter of 2023 there was a 10% increase in the turnover of online super markets, reaching 76 million euros.
An overwhelming percentage
From the Focus on Tech Life survey by Focus Bari, it appears that the most dynamic buying public is that of the 25 to 35 age range, with 90% of online purchases. Also important is the increase that has occurred in the older age groups, especially since the pandemic and after.
The 45-54 age group saw a 9% increase from 2021-2023, since from 69% of consumers in this age group shopping online in 2021, this percentage is now 76%.
In the ages from 55-65 the increase in the same period is 8% and in the ages from 65 to 74 years 24%. In all ages, in the period 2021-2023 the increase is 5%, as from 68% of consumers who make online purchases, the percentage has now reached 71%.
In 2022, e-commerce in Greece realized a turnover of 15.8 billion euros, according to a relevant investigation by the Competition Commission.
This amount was increased by 10% compared to the corresponding performance of 2021, with online sales in Greece having more than tripled within six years (2017-2022), since in 2017 they reached a total of just 5 billion euros.
