“Alexandroupolis is like an airplane on the runway, ready to take off,” Alexandroupolis mayor Giannis Zampoukis told OT.gr, presenting the new face of the frontier city.
It is the first city for anyone visiting the European Union from the east, as he characteristically said, pointing out that the tourism and developmental trajectory should be combined in the future and be embraced by society. A crucial issue at this time in the city is the sale of the majority package of the port, said Mr. Zamboukis, estimating that this process will change the economy-city-port relationship. The investments are very close and the face of the port and of Alexandroupolis will change, as he emphatically said.
Mr. Zamboukis estimated that there will be benefits for the city and what is required in this phase is a social and economic restart, as 100 years ago the creation of the port and the advent of the railway helped decisively in changing the face of the city.
In terms of tourism, Mr. Zamboukis appeared completely satisfied with this season as at the end of the summer the occupancy of the city infrastructure reached 100%, as it was an excellent year. “Our city is offered for city-break as they have the island of Samothrace, the Delta of Evros, Didymoteicho, the forest of Dadia, but also the new city that is developing rapidly Orestiada”.
Finally, Mr. Zamboukis referred to the ongoing urban infrastructure rehabilitation program of Alexandroupolis with a budget of 12.5 million euros.
