Former Cypriot foreign minister Nikos Christodoulides is expected to be elected as the eighth president of the Republic of Cyprus, following results of the second round of a presidential election on the east Mediterranean island republic.

Late-night exit polls, with all votes counted, given Christodoulides nearly 52 percent, compared to slightly more than 48 percent for Andreas Mavroyiannis, with the latter conceding his defeat and announcing a departure from the politics.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was among the first world leaders to call Christodoulides and offer his congratulations, while inviting him to Athens for his first official visit as the head of the state of the island republic.
