Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, billed as the largest in Europe, this week confirmed its interest in the Elefsina Shipyard, west of Piraeus, as part of future cooperation with Syros-based Onex Shipyards.
The interest was confirmed during a meeting between top Greek ministers and the CEO of Onex, Panos Xenokostas, and Fincantieri General Manager of Defense Giuseppe Giordo, with the latter expressing the Trieste-based group’s interest in participating in the Elefsina’s facility’s restructuring, in partnership with Onex.
In commenting on the prospect, Development & Investment Minister Adonis Georgiadis welcomed the prospect on behalf of the Greek government.
On his part, Giordo referred to a “major step in Greek-Italian business cooperation. Our goal is to contribute so that one of the best shipbuilding industries in the world is created in Greece.”
