“Damage control” was on the agenda on Saturday in the wake of confirmation that Greece’s intelligence agency (EYP) had previously wiretapped the mobile phone of opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis.

The Sunday weekly “Vima”, in an article, fields comments by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ associates, whereby the latter is quoted as referring to a “major and unforgiveable mistake”. The same sources have Mitsotakis adding that he owes an apology to Androulakis, a current MEP who last autumn was elected as the president of the lesser opposition party.

At the same time, sources emphasized that Mitsotakis underlined that he was never informed of such surveillance, which according to other reports, came before Androulakis was elected as the new PASOK leader in an internal party election.

Mitsotakis is scheduled to publicly address the explosive issue on Monday. The general secretary of the prime minister’s office, Grigoris Dimitriadis, and the head of EYP, Panagiotis Kontoleon, resigned on Friday amid the political furor.
