
The restart of the cruise industry in Piraeus after the first long period of the pandemic was dynamic, according to the Riraeus Port Authority.
Specifically, in 2022 there were 677 arrivals, compared to 379 in 2021 and 622 in 2019, an increase of 79% and 9% respectively. As for 2023, there are already bookings for at least 829 cruise ships, an increase of 22% compared to 2022, while the number of cruise ships that started and/or ended their journey at Piraeus-homeport- was 441 in 2022, compared to 220 in 2021 and 331 in 2019, a remarkable increase of 100% in the first case and 33% in the second. Finally, bookings for 2023 regarding homeport cruises are already 629, an increase of 43% compared to 2022.
Piraeus Port Authority Awarded
It is worth noting that PPA S.A. was awarded, at a special event themed “Destination 365 days Greece”, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, for the great contribution of the port of Piraeus to the country’s tourism through its high performance in the cruise sector.
The award was received by the President of PPA SA. Mr. Yu Zenggang, who addressed a brief greeting during the event, thanked for the distinction and then mentioned that the systematic work being done at the port of Piraeus is obviously bringing the desired results, stressing that all achievements substantially strengthen the Greek economy, but also especially the local community and the coastal municipalities. Finally, the President of PPA S.A. noted the systematic and targeted work was committed to continue in exactly the same way at the port, seeking for Piraeus to contribute over time to the further strengthening of the country’s competitiveness in global shipping, tourism, and international trade.
