
The Greek-controlled ocean-going fleet, numbering 4,709 vessels at latest count, is valued at 152.69 billion USD, in third place globally, according to Vessels Value.
Japanese shipping is in first place, with 5,974 and a total value of 193.64 billion USD; China is in second place with more vessels, 7,114, but with a lesser value than the Japanese fleet, 182.49 billion USD.
Greek-controlled shipping was ranked second in 2022 in terms of second-hand vessel transactions, reported at 428, and with a value calculated at 11.7 billion USD. Chinese shipping interests were first, with 532 transactions valued at 12.93 billion USD.
Greek shipping companies and owners were also in second place in terms of vessel investments, totaling 9.77 billion USD.
Bulkers are the most numerous vessels in the Greek-controlled fleet, numbering 2,272, with their value reaching 42.1 billion USD; tankers follow, with 1,450 vessels of this type (61.03 billion USD in value) – posting a 13-year high in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Despite a three-figure number of LNG carriers, 127 such vessels are held by Greek interests, surging demand for natural gas has boosted the value of the Greek-owned fleet to 30.5 billion USD.
