The latest in a flurry of opinion polls in Greece – after the declaration of a general election on May 21 – has ruling New Democracy (ND) party ahead of main opposition SYRIZA by 4.8 percentage points.
The poll was conducted by the GPO firm and published in the newspaper “Parapolitika”. The poll was conducted between April 3 and April 5 on a sample of 1,000 respondents.
One noteworthy result to emerge from this specific poll is that public opinion is apparently not considering the deadly Tempi train collision on Feb. 28 as a primary factor in determining one’s vote, with day-to-day issues, such as cost-of-living and inflation, returning to the forefront.
Asked which party they will vote for on Sunday, May 21, 31.4 percent of respondents said center-right ND, with 26.6 percent picking leftist SYRIZA.
The same firm’s poll in February 2023 gave ND 33.8 percent, falling to 29.5 percent the next month, March. SYRIZA, conversely, was given 26.4 percent in February 2023 and 25.6 in March.
Asked who is most suitable for prime minister from current political leaders, 46 percent of respondents picked incumbent premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and 34.2 percent preferred former prime minister Alexis Tsipras.
