ONEX Elefsis Shipyards, the revived industrial unit west of Piraeus proper in the greater Athens area, has been selected by the S. Korean government as a new maritime shipping innovation and development center, with the emphasis on upgrading and transforming standard vessels into “eco-friendly”.
The shipyards, operated by Syros-based ONEX and Italian multinational Fincantieri group, will participate in a research and development program operated by the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial technology Aerospace & Shipbuilding Team.
The research program is fully funded by the industrial, commerce and energy ministry of South Korea, and is expected to begin in June 2023
The program aims to improve operating and energy efficiency of ocean-going vessels by adopting state-of-the-art technologies and alternative fuels (LPG, LNG, etc.)
