The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vassilis Kaskarelis, is expected to have a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Olta Xhaçka, on the sidelines of his participation in the informal Summit of NATO Foreign Ministers in Oslo, in order to raise the issue of the release of the elected the mayor of Heimarra, Fredi Beleris, and Pantelis Kokavesis, according to diplomatic sources.
At the same time, as the same sources report, the Greek Foreign Minister is in constant communication with the Greek ambassador to Albania, Konstantina Kamitsi, in order to be constantly informed, while at the same time appropriate instructions are given for the handling of the case in question.
It is noted that – following relevant instructions – the ambassador of Greece has recently met with both of them and is in constant communication with their relatives and lawyers.
What happened in the local elections
“Democracy won, Himara won. Thank you, those who showed fortitude. I sympathize with those who succumbed to terrorism!” This was the message that Fredis Beleri sent – from prison – after his victory in the self-governing elections in the region.
The expatriate, although under arrest, managed in a battle that was decided on 19 votes, to defeat Giorgi Goro, the candidate supported by all means by Edi Rama, collecting 50.12% against his opponent’s 49.88%.
Celebrations by the Greeks of Albania
With the announcement of the result, the Greeks erupted in celebrations.
The celebrations from the counting room in seconds moved outside the building where hundreds of expatriates were waiting for the election result.
The Greeks of Himara, who with the arrest of Fredis Beleri lived in fear, poured into the streets of the city.
