Greece’s privatization fund (HRADF) on Friday abruptly announced that it was closing the Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA) and the adjacent velodrome due to concerns over the structural integrity of the metallic roofs over the two facilities.
The agency said an “extensive inspection” of the two structures, designed by the renowned architectural firm of Santiago Calatrava, revealed the problem.
Both facilities are included in the privatization agency’s portfolio.
A press release by HRADF said a second study will take place immediately to confirm results of the first inspection.
The biggest “casualty” of the decision is the home games of Panathinaikos Athens in this season’s Europa League football competition.
The OAKA stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and the track and field competitions.
