New Integrated system aims to streamline collection of arrears by social insurance funds

The Greek government this week cited initial positive results from a newly implemented electronic system aimed to monitor and more efficiently collect arrears owed to social security funds.

According to the latest figures listed in a Greek parliament budget report, the number of individual debtors fell by 93,794 in 2023, compared to 2022, despite the fact that arrears to insurance funds in the country – by individuals and legal entities – still remain high, at the stratospheric level of 29.244 billion euros, in value.

The new system was tested on a pilot basis over previous months, disseminating thousands of notifications, beginning at the end of August, to individuals and businesses who failed to utilize an existing instalment and settlement scheme.

Total arrears owed to social insurance funds in Greece, at the end of 2Q 2023, stood at 46.5 billion euros, an increase, by 618 million euros, compared to the preceding quarter.
