Almost one in every three citizens (28.3%) faced a risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2021, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous year. As a result, the number of citizens facing proverty is 2.971 million, down from 3.044 million in 2020.
According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data for the decade 2010-2021, there has been a steady decline from 2014 onwards.
Regarding poverty risk, it concerns the percentage of people, living in households, whose total equivalised disposable income is below the poverty threshold, i.e. 60% of the national median (the income at the middle of the distribution) equivalised disposable income.
The risk of poverty or social exclusion is highest for children aged 17 and under (32.4%).
The share of the population aged 18-64, living in low labour-intensive households, is estimated at 13.6% of the total population in this age group, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points compared to 2020. The share for men is 12.5% and for women 14.6%.
The poverty threshold rises to €5,251 per year per single person household from €5,269 in 2020.
Regarding the poverty gap, the rate reaches 26.4% in 2021 from 27.3% in 2020
