OT’s report, on Thursday, that Public Power Corp. (PPC) and natgas supplier Depa Commercial are eying directy participation in a new gas-fired power plant proposed by the Copelouzos group, were confirmed a day later.
According to a dispatch by Bloomberg, who cited a source close to project, talks are underway between the three parties for a new unit in northern Greece.
According to the news agency, “…if the plan materializes, Greece’s largest electricity producer (state-run PPC) will manage the new plant, that will also be able to run on hydrogen, while Depa and Copelouzos (Group) will also participate in the project,” Bloomberg quoted the source as saying.
The article also notes that while Greece isn’t expected to face power shortages in coming years, a proposed site for the new unit will be “strategically located” in order to be near to other Balkan countries to its north. Along those lines, the extreme northeast port city of Alexandroupolis was mentioned.
“Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in May inaugurated the construction of a floating LNG terminal off Alexandroupolis. From there, pipelines will send the fuel into the Greek network and on to consumers late next year. The facility will also be linked with other regional networks, such as the Trans Adriatic Pipeline and the soon-to-begin Greece-Bulgaria inter-connector,” Bloomberg added.
