Another important step towards sustainable tourism was made by the people of Lipsi, aiming at the correct use of water resources produced through desalination. In the context of a global initiative that implements the finish in Greece with the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med), an action group with the active support of the Municipality of Lipsi, they equipped all households on the island with special water-saving filters, showing the correct way of use of the devices and assisting in their placement.
At the same time, following the actions of the Municipality to purchase a digital fault locator in the water supply network, water leaks are zeroed out as any problem that would lead to a waste of resources is now identified and repaired. For the next period, the supply and installation of an automatic chlorination system will be initiated and the desalination unit will be upgraded following a study and request from the Municipality to the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy. In this way, the goal is to fully control the quality of the water but also to increase the daily production by 15%, in order to anticipate the growing tourist traffic with 24-hour and non-stop water supply. “The result of the actions that are already being implemented is impressive.
For June 2023 alone, 4,000 cubic meters of water were spent less compared to the corresponding month of 2022, leading to an impressive reduction in water consumption to the order of 32%”, said the Mayor of Lipsi Fotis Mangos and added that, “the acceptance of tourists in our sustainable appeal is great and bookings for Lipsi are on the rise with occupancy on the island of Calypso estimated to “touch” 95% for July and August. Through our interventions, sufficient drinking water with a much better quality will be available in the future for both residents and our visitors.”
