Greek Parliament Prepares for Heated Battles on New Legislation

A series of contentious bills on labor, public media, defense, and migration will test the government’s agenda ahead of December’s budget vote

Greek Parliament Prepares for Heated Battles on New Legislation

The Greek Parliament has opened its new session with a crowded legislative calendar that promises weeks of political confrontation. Lawmakers will debate a series of measures ranging from labor reform to defense modernization, before turning in December to the country’s 2026 budget.

The most divisive proposal so far comes from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. Introduced by Minister Niki Kerameus, the bill includes a provision for a 13-hour workday for certain sectors, drawing swift condemnation from opposition parties and labor representatives. The measure is now under committee review. This week in Parliament there has already been heated debate with opposition MP and former Minister of Labor Efi Achtsioglou, accusing Niki Kerameus of using the governor of the independent Labor Inspectorate -whose election to the post has been challenged in the Council of State according to recently published reports- as political cover. Several opposition parties have signalled they will vote against it.

Other legislation is also in the pipeline. A bill on the role of Greece’s public broadcaster, drafted by Deputy Minister Pavlos Marinakis, is expected to reach committee discussions soon. Later this fall, Parliament will take up measures announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair, aimed at supporting households and businesses, as well as a defense bill that would restructure the armed forces to meet new strategic challenges. The Ministry of Migration and Asylum is also preparing a proposal on legal migration, another contentious piece of legislation that is gathering domestic and European interest.

Beyond the legislative agenda, political leaders will debate foreign policy issues on October 16. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will open the session with a formal briefing under parliamentary rules, followed by responses from party leaders across the spectrum.

Taken together, the agenda sets up a season of high-stakes parliamentary confrontations. With labor reforms, defense and migration policy under review, and the budget vote looming, the government is attempting to plough forward with several contentious pieces of legislation that will draw the ire of different groups of voters.
