A 23-year-old man has reportedly confessed to the fatal street-side beating and stabbing of a 19-year-old man on Monday in the northern city of Thessaloniki, a shocking incident attributed, at least in repeated media reports, to football-related hooliganism.
The slaying of Alkis Kambanou shocked Greek public opinion and generated a high-level response, with the Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis requesting that the case be urgently solved by law enforcement.
Another two young men were beaten in the incident, which took place in the Harilaou district of Thessaloniki, near the home pitch of local premier league club Aris FC.
According to reports, two vehicles stopped in front of a group of five young men, including the victim, with several suspects exiting the two vehicles and asking the former what football team they support.
Authorities believe the men in the vehicles are hardcore supporters of Aris rivals PAOK Thessaloniki.
The suspect was described as an Albanian national, 23, with a temporary residency permit in Greece.What raised eyebrows even further is the fact that the alleged perpetrator had been arrested in 2019 for hooligan-related violence and was still awaiting trial while on bail.
