Civil protection services were on emergency standby in Greece at the beginning of the week due to a pending storm front again expected to pass through the still flood-soaked Thessaly plain and accompanying regions in the central part of the country.
The current storm front, named “Elias”, is forecast to dump high amounts of rainfall in areas still suffering from the record-breaking storm “Daniel”, which devastated central Greece two weeks ago.
Magnesia prefecture, for instance, recorded the highest rainfall in all of Europe for the current month and record-breaking figures for Greece on a 24-hour basis.
Storms and hail were already reported along western Greece, with a mudslide closing a portion of the east-bound Corinth-Patras highway.
