Six Metropolitans (bishops) of the Church of Greece, along with a police officer, had acid thrown at them on Wednesday, reportedly by a disgruntled priest facing disciplinary action.

The hierarchs served as the members of the disciplinary board.

The hearing, called a synodal tribunal by the Greek Orthodox Church, was taking place at the Petraki Monastery in the upscale Kolonaki district of central Athens, where members of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece meet.

Three of the hierarchs were more severely injured than the others and were taken to a north Athens hospital’s burn unit.

The perpetrator was arrested on the spot by police guards.
