Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed the establishment of a Supreme Cooperation Council between Greece and Egypt in effort to strengthen their strategic relationship after his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo earlier today.
The Greek PM commented on the countries’ excellent bilateral relations and cooperation in the energy sector, citing the GREGY Interconnector electricity interconnection project.
Furthermore, PM Mitsotakis emphasized the need for Egypt’s cooperation in managing illegal immigration to prevent the opening of a new migration route from Libya to Crete.
On a European note, PM Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction with the upgrade of EU-Egypt relations to a Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership, more on which will be discussed during the meeting between the EU leaders later today.
Finally, the Greek PM thanked President al-Sisi for organizing the visit to the Siwa Oasis, a place of significance to the cultural relations of Egypt and Greece as it is where the Oracle of Amun-Ra is located, which was visited by Alexander the Great in 331 BC.
The two leaders will sign a Joint Statement for the establishment of the Supreme Cooperation Council in the afternoon.
According to the official itinerary, European leaders will meet with the President of Egypt at 2:30PM, while discussions between the countries’ delegations will follow. Press statements will be made at 5:15PM.
