Seafarers’ union in Greece to strike on Thurs.

Coast shipping will not operate in Greece on Thursday due to a 24-hour strike called by the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO), an umbrella union of seafarers in Greece that includes 13 individual affiliates.

The federation called the strike on the occasion of the May Day labor commemoration. Although May 1 fell on Saturday this week, and a day before Orthodox Easter Sunday, unions in Greece usually “bump” whatever industrial actions days later, always during a weekend.

The strike will affect ferry boat routes from the mainland to the various islands in the Aegean and Ionian, as well as channel links.
