Well-known Greek basketball coach Giannis Ioannidis passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78.

He coached the iconic Aris Thessaloniki team of the 1990s, led by Nick Gallis and Panagiotis Yiannakis, a club that dominated the sport in the country and emerged as one of the finest on the European continent.

Ioannidis, who was born in Thessaloniki in 1945 and played with Aris as a player in the late 1950s, also coached and won titles with Olympiacos Piraeus and AEK Athens.

He also served as an elected Parliamentary deputy and was an ex-deputy sports minister.
