Municipal taxes in Athens will be reduced by 5% across the board, according to a proposal tabled to the city council by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis on Monday.

In an interview over the weekend, the mayor said that he would introduce the measure in order to “relieve and support citizens – this winter will be difficult.” This will be the biggest reduction of municipal taxes in the last 15 years, according to the city.

City upgrading projects will continue, he said, as the budget this year will be over 1 billion euros for the first time. “We have succeeded in claiming European funds, which will allow us to do all the projects in neighborhoods and the center of Athens,” he added. The plan is to convince younger people to return to the city, and projects include playgrounds, parks, sports facilities, and a replacement of all city lights – 45,00 of them – with LED ones, he explained.
