The first major nationwide cold front is expected to hit mainland Greece and many of the Aegean islands over the weekend, with significant snowfall – including the possibility of blizzard-like conditions – forecast for mountainous and semi-mountainous regions. Lowland districts will also see snow, beginning on Sunday.
The storm front, given the name “Barbara”, generated warnings by Greek civil protection authorities and the fire brigade to avoid unnecessary travel and to keep snow chains in vehicles, as the new traffic code now obliges.
Rough seas with up to 9 on the Beaufort scale winds are also forecast.
Sub-zero temperatures, as low as -13C, along with frost are forecast in the north.
