At least 32 people were killed in a collision between stranded passenger rail cars and a cargo train in the early morning hours in a gorge in north-central Greece, north of the city of Larissa. Dozens of passengers have been hospitalized, many in serious condition.

A massive search and rescue effort was underway at the site, the entrance to the Tempi Valley.

Initial reports claim that the passenger train heading from Athens to Thessaloniki was immobilized due to a cut power cable, although this wasn’t relayed to the ongoing train, headed in the opposite direction but on the same track, while signal posts were not changed to indicate the stranded rail cars.
