The lead contractor in the construction of a new international airport in Irakleio (Heraklion) Crete, Terna, reported a 30% completion figure this week, following an inspection by the relevant transport minister.

Excavation, anti-flooding works, taxiing corridors and plane slots have been built, with ongoing works to complete the runways.

Construction is ongoing for the incomplete terminal building, according to the contractor.

The new airport, at the Kasteli site, will replace the outdated Nikos Kazantzakis airport, which is the second busiest in Greece.

The consortium holding the concession to the new airport, officially called International Airport of Heraklion, is comprised of the Greek state (45.9%), Terna (32.46%) and the India-based corporation GMR Airports Ltd. (21.64%).

The project will be 100% constructed by Terna SA.
