Greece’s electricity transmission operation, ADMIE, on Tuesday said several high-voltage lines of the national grid have been knocked out north of Athens proper, due to a raging wildfire in the area, with the threat of power outages now feared for the eastern Attica prefecture.

An emergency meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon by top officials representing the power regulator, the transmission grid operator and power companies.

The main north-south highway connecting the greater Athens area has been closed near Varibobi, where the wildfire erupted, while rail service was also interrupted.
