A long-awaited initiative to finally install contact-less payments in the greater Athens-Piraeus area’s mass transit systems begins with a pilot program on Thursday, and specifically on express bus routes servicing the Athens International Airport (AIA).

The timeframe is to install such payments – via bank cards, smartphones and smartwatches – in all mass transit systems in the Greek capital, namely, buses, trolleys, the metro and tram lines.

The new contact-less terminals were presented on Wednesday during a special event in central Athens, attended by the leaderships of the relevant transport ministry’s leadership, the bus service (OASA) and the representatives of the companies supplying the hardware and software.

Currently, commuters use either print tickets or a prepaid card for paying fares.
