The University of Athens, officially known as the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), has reportedly commenced a process to revoke an honorary doctorate awarded to Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2001, the university’s administration announced on Wednesday.

The university rectors’ council said it has also briefed faculty administrators of the European Civic University (CIVIS) framework, a collaboration of 10 top higher education institutions in Europe, over the decision.

During an online meeting the same day y between representatives of CIVIS schools, members were informed that several universities in Ukraine are nearly destroyed or are in the process of trying to reopen.

EKPA has proposed a twinning of European universities with Ukrainian higher educational institutes, individually or as a group, in order to boost reconstruction and re-operation.
