The first 17-year-old in Greece awarded a temporary driver’s license came this week, after a recent change in legislation allowing for this specific age group to get behind the wheel of a passenger vehicle, buy under certain conditions.

The main conditions that a 17-year-old driver must adhere to in the country include the presence of an adult in the vehicle with a valid driver’s license; driving only in the geographic region of their residence and bearing the Greek letter “Σ” (sigma) on the back windshield, which indicates an accompanied underage driver behind the wheel.

If no violations or accidents are recorded in the period up until a temporary driver reaches the age of 18, then the temporary license become permanent.

The first such eligible driver was handed his “Σ” indicator by Greek Transport Minister Costas A. Karamanlis during a brief ceremony marking the occasion on Wednesday at an Athens-area driving course.
