The construction of five photovoltaic parks in the Municipality of Kastoria, in Western Macedonia, with a total installed capacity of 0.5 MW and worth about 700,000 euros was fully financed by the TAP gas pipeline.
The project was carried out in collaboration with the Local Land Improvement Organizations (TOEB) of Korisos – Lithia and Vassiliada – Stavropotamos – Melissotopou – Verga and will benefit the approximately 2,000 inhabitants of the neighboring communities.
According to the company, 1,085 solar panels were installed in the communities of Korisos, Lithia, Vassiliada and Stavropotamos. The rated power of each photovoltaic park is 100kW, while the estimated annual electricity production and efficiency of each park, in a life cycle of 25 years, is approximately 145,000 kWh and 3,250,000 kWh respectively.
The project is designed to provide net metering and may allow growers to reduce irrigation-related energy costs and improve the efficiency of irrigation networks and processes by enhancing the competitiveness of their agricultural products in the market.
Benefits
The Regional Governor of Western Macedonia, Giorgos Kasapidis, welcomed the completion of the construction of the photovoltaic parks and thanked TAP for the good cooperation with the Region. He also underlined the significant contribution of this project to the sustainable development of the region, noting the important role of the Region of Western Macedonia in the energy transition of the country.
The Mayor of Kastoria, Ioannis Korentsidis, also mentioned the benefits of photovoltaic parks for the region, emphasizing their contribution to the reduction of energy costs for farmers. At the same time, he thanked TAP for the financing and TOEB Korisos – Lithias and Vassiliada – Stavropotamos – Melissotopou – Vergas for their contribution to the implementation of the project.
The presidents of TOEB Korisos – Lithias and Vassiliada – Stavropotamos – Melissotopou – Vergas, Christos Kouzinas and Skleklios Kosmas added that the implementation of this project actively supports the smooth operation of the two Local Organizations related to irrigation of crops, TOEBs will be able to intensify their efforts to support their members’ farms.
Welcoming the completion of the project, the Director of the Greek Office of TAP, Ioannis Maris, said: “The construction of five photovoltaic parks in the area of Kastoria reflects the vision of TAP to contribute to a sustainable energy future, responding to development in sustainable ways. “Western Macedonia is among the regions that are the focus of Greek energy and environmental policy for sustainable investments and that is why we are particularly pleased that we have successfully supported an initiative that can contribute to the energy transition of this region.”
TAP Greece’s Director of Social & Environmental Investments, Vasiliki Sotiropoulou, added: “The construction of the photovoltaic parks is fully in line with the objectives of TAP’s Social and Environmental Investments program to improve the quality of life of local communities along the way , in a sustainable way that reflects their real needs. “
